KUDO opens the 15th Asian Games
Doha, Qatar
The 15th Asian Games were officially opened on December 1st by HH Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani at Doha's Khalifa Stadium. In a breathtaking ceremony, a movie was cast on the world's largest LCD while a spectacular live show featuring hundreds of performers was taking place on the field.
Artistic director David Atkins, in charge of the creation of the opening and closing ceremonies at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, devised a show under the theme of Qatar reaching out to Asia, celebrating its history, its culture and the spirit of the games.
Several top stars performed during this opening ceremony such as Chinese pop star Jacky Cheung, Spanish tenor Jose Carreras, Bollywood singer Sunidhi Chauhan as well as Lebanese artist Magida El Roumi.
The show was broadcast live in 60 countries throughout the world, and the 50 000 spectators enjoyed the KUDO sound system design by Audio Director Bruce Jackson, and, Audio Design Consultant Scott Willsallen.
Australian based sound company Norwest Productions supplied the 112 L-ACOUSTICS KUDO cabinets, to be used again on December 15th during the closing ceremony.

Kudo flys high at Red Bull Air Race
The capital city of Perth hosted for the very first time the Red Bull Air Race on November 19th, 2006. The spectacular event was be the centre-piece of a city-wide festival of aviation and the race course itself took place on the body of water called 'Perth Waters' on the Swan River, one of the city's main attractions. So far, more than 6 million people have watched the Red Bull Air Race, a series of international race meetings held all over the world including Abu Dhabi, Barcelona, Berlin, Istanbul, Budapest, Longleat and San Francisco.
The race itself features nine pilots competing in time-trials and flying their planes at speeds of 400kph, 20 feet above the water, a breathtaking sight for spectators allowed to get close to the action, to say the leas. Neil Campbell and his team at AAA Productions had therefore a fairly unusual "venue" to cover, with a crowd of 300,000 over 1,5 km long and 200m deep along the foreshore.
Neil opted to use 63 L-ACOUSTICS KUDO in 9 towers. The specification requested by RED BULL asked for 120 metres throw across the entire area of 45,000 sqm. Hearing KUDO sounding large and crystal clear with an almost stereo-like quality from 150 metres away across open ground was quite an impressive experience. Clearly, KUDO and AAA Productions confirmed they could meet the highest expectations of a complete and polished production that leaves nothing to chance.

L-Acoustics Kudo Opens Commonwealth Games
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony saw the implementation of the largest collection of L-ACOUSTICS KUDO elements ever assembled.
Playing host to the 80,000-plus audience for the event was the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (or MCG). The MCG may be an internationally acclaimed sporting venue, but it is surely one of the most hostile acoustic environments on the planet. Effectively it is an enormous concrete cauldron, with enough hard reflective surfaces to cause any sound system problems and a reverb decay time that would give any audio engineer nightmares.
Fortunately the Australian audio team was highly experienced and world leaders in ensuring the success of marquee events such as this. Norwest Productions was the production company for the event, as it was for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and more recently played a pivotal role in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Athens 2004 Olympics. Meanwhile, Technical Director Nick Eltis and Audio Director Scott Willsallen reprised their roles of Athens 2004 for the Melbourne 2006 event. Suffice it to say, these gentlemen had felt the pressure of expectation before and knew what equipment they could rely on to deliver the high-quality results demanded of them.
Pivotal to the success of the Opening Ceremony sound was L-ACOUSTICS KUDO. The KUDO were positioned around the perimeter of the field firing into the stands. There were 29 identical KUDO clusters spaced some 15 or 20 metres apart in a left/right, left/right etc., configuration. Each array consisted of three KUDO elements, their splay angles varying depending on the intended coverage. In all, 87 KUDO elements were used.
" The KUDO is the point of focus for the whole system," revealed Audio Director, Scott Willsallen. "The top KUDO element on the field-of-play is covering the upper bowl, but it has a great distance to cover, hence the delay stacks. But the timing between the Kudo and the flown delay arrays is such that the point of focus remains the field-of-play. The idea is to pull the focus down onto the ground, rather than have it all up in the air where it doesn't mean anything."
And the performance of the Kudo system?
" It sounds superb," continued Willsallen. " We were given Version 2 settings by L-ACOUSTICS, and it's sounding significantly better. The KUDO low crossover point has moved, which has made a huge difference to the sound. Getting the new settings on pre-release from L-Acoustics was great as it helped keep the entire system's bass under control. "
The Opening Ceremony was an enormous event. As an indication of the scale, there were some 4750 in-ear monitor receivers used on the night - one for each and every cast member. And although, many of the event's international viewers may have been somewhat bemused by the sight of a flying tram, ballerinas, motor cyclists, and a duck sharing the same stage, the 80,000-plus audience was entranced - thanks, in no small part, to the contribution of the superb sound provided by the KUDO PA.

Adelaide's Rocket Bar
In its press material, Adelaide's Rocket Bar describes itself as 'the city's most unique live venue'. For once, I won't quibble about grammar and semantics - 'most unique'? - as it's plain to see that Rocket is truly one of a kind.
The Rocket Bar is replete with retro décor from light-fittings, lamps, and lounges to arcade games, pinball and pool tables ?giving it that whole mature, '70s rumpus cum bachelor pad vibe.
Aesthetics aside, what's most remarkable about the Rocket Bar is the fact that it's a brand new live music venue, which has invested heavily in its sound system - not only financially, but in the consideration given to maximising the venue's flexibility, both night-to-night and hour-to-hour.

Dream Centre Church installs L-ACOUSTICS speaker system
The Dream Centre Christian Church at Carrara, Queensland, recently purchased L-ACOUSTICS XT & MTD coaxial speaker systems which were installed and commissioned by Dave Williams Sound Advice from the Gold Coast.
Technical Director Michael Hickey says " When the decision was made to proceed with a PA upgrade for the Main Auditorium a simple brief was issued to source a system that will produce a warm, rich sound that is clear, crisp and consistent and distribute it evenly throughout the expanse of the 2000 seat auditorium.
After extensive research, many A, B and even C comparisons, everyone unanimously agreed the search was over when the L-ACOUSTICS system was introduced to us for the first time. Intelligibility of the spoken word and live music plays a vital role in the worship services at the Dream Centre. The vocals are now more defined, instruments are transparently reproduced and more musical. We have also gained greater volume in the room resulting in a more vibrant, dynamic atmosphere without the harshness. This now means that those located in the back of the auditorium can enjoy and feel a part of the event as much as those up the front.
The Dream Centre Complex is used as a multi-functional facility hosting events ranging from small and large corporate functions, theatrical productions to touring band concerts as well as regular Sunday church services. This diversity places a high demand on the PA to deliver appropriately under these varied environments and applications. The L-ACOUSTICS system far surpasses our expectations in every way."

L-ACOUSTICS Launches KUDO
New Generation of Line Source Array Systems
L-ACOUSTICS® KUDO is a new generation of line source array offering far more flexibility and possibilities than any other line array to date. KUDO marks a significant evolution in L-ACOUSTICS pioneering Wavefront Sculpture Technology® (WST) since WST can now be performed in both vertical and horizontal planes.
Two patented DOSC waveguides are incorporated in KUDO, allowing WST to be performed either vertically or horizontally. In parallel, coverage pattern adjustment is available in the perpendicular plane using patent-pending K-Louver technology. Mechanically-adjustable K-Louvers provide directivity control for the mid/high section and allow KUDO to be reconfigured with four different coverage pattern settings.
APPLICATIONS
L-ACOUSTICS KUDO is primarily intended for end users such as regional sound companies for touring or corporate applications and for high-performance permanent installation in theatres, concert halls, houses of worship, sports facilities, clubs, congress centers, hotel ballrooms, theme parks or arenas. As a full range 3-way system, KUDO can be used for corporate, classical or theatrical sound reinforcement without subwoofers due to its exceptional low end performance. For touring applications, the addition of L-ACOUSTICS subwoofers is recommended. A complete turnkey system is available consisting of KUDO enclosures, dedicated rigging, L-ACOUSTICS subwoofers, OEM factory presets for approved digital signal processors, turnkey power amplifier racks and associated loudspeaker plus signal distribution paneling and cables. All elements of the KUDO system have been selected for their quality and durability. And there is a strong emphasis placed on complementary technical support and training.

Mercury Lounge updates with L-ACOUSTICS
The Mercury Lounge in the Crown Casino Melbourne recently purchased L-ACOUSTICS speaker systems for the newly refurbished'Spy Bar'.
The MTD coaxial speaker systems were installed and commissioned by Sherrit Audio Services from Melbourne.
Since the completion of the installation the Mercury Lounge has received a great response and rave reviews from both patrons and the in-house / guest DJ's.
Resident DJ in the Mercury Lounge, Darren Glen, says "as DJ the sound system that I have to use is one of my most important working tools. They have excelled with their new installation of the L-ACOUSTICS system. It is certainly one of the best sound systems I have used and is of international standard."
General Manager Michael Mathieson says, " This L-ACOUSTICS system would have to be the best small room setup I have ever heard. The installation met our specifications perfectly. We wanted it to be balanced so staff could hear customers without the usual shouting that goes into ordering a drink in a nightclub. It still had to be loud enough to block out our main room because we weren't using doors or walls to separate the two rooms. We wanted a room to be filled with the cleanest sound and no apparent main speaker source. There is still plenty of grunt when needed, but always evenly spread throughout the room. What a great system. "
The MERCURY LOUNGE is located on the 3rd floor of the Crown Complex, 8 Whiteman Street, Southbank.

AudioTechnology magazine Reviews MTD108a
Writing in Audio Technology Trevor Cronin had this to say about the L-ACOUSTICS MTD108a
" ...easy to configure, amazingly lightweight and sounds tremendous. It's hard to believe the output capabilities of these speakers when you look at their dimensions - the level they produce is just sensational. This system is loud, clear and is of studio monitor quality. "
